In the men's event, Spain's Juan-Carlos Ferrero defeated Switzerland's Roger Federer in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Like Williams, Ferrero was delighted to start the new year with a confidence-building win. "It's always difficult to play against Roger, but I think I played well today," the 23-year-old Spaniard said.
"I will have confidence now for Sydney and Melbourne," added Ferrero, who plays next week's Sydney International ATP event before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
