ARTICLE - Unwell Ferrero suffers shock loss

Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero crashed to a straight-sets defeat by Alberto Martin in the second round of the Valencia Open on Thursday.

Ferrero, who lost 6-4 6-2, blamed a fever for the poor quality of his display against his fellow Spaniard.

"I was tired from halfway through the first set, so I tried to win it by being more aggressive in the second set, but I couldn't," he said.

RESULTS - Valencia Rd. 1

World No. 21 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who clinched the 2003 Valencia title (d. C. Rochus) weeks before winning his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros (d. Verkerk), required 64 minutes to beat Ernest Gulbis of Latvia 6-3, 6-1.

Second-seeded Ferrero now waits for the winner of Wednesday’s clash between Spanish compatriot Alberto Martin and Feliciano Lopez, who competed against the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals at the weekend.

EXHIBITION: America's Cup



Almagro, Ferrero, Garcia-Lopez, Volandri Make Waves at America's Cup Exhibition

Capitalizing on the huge public interest in the 2007 America’s Cup, held in Valencia, organizers of the V Open de Tenis Comunidad Valenciana sent four players to the port for an exhibition with a difference on Sunday.

One day after the finish of Act 13, which comprised fleet racing between 11 challengers from nine countries, Nicolas Almagro, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Filippo Volandri and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez all boarded two catamarans for an impromptu hit.

The 32nd America’s Cup is being held in Europe for the first time in 150 years.

The challenger selection series , which is called the Louis Vuitton Cup will take place in Valencia from April 16 to June 12, 2007. The 2007 America's Cup match will take place in Valencia between June 23 and July 7, 2007.
