INTERVIEW Day 6 - Saturday, May 28, 2005

>> video

Q. Very, very few points decided this match today because three sets were so close. Thinking about the match now, is there anything you could have done different?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I think that I could make it the chance that I had in the first set with 5-3, and the second as well with 3-Love and 4-1. So I had many chances to could win that two sets. But finally was too close and was 7-6, 7-5 for him.

So, you know, was very tough to record. But, anyway, I fight until the final, you know, and I think that I had my chance in the fourth with a break as well to get the set.

But, you know, sometimes when you don't get the chances, finally you go to the shower losing.

Q. That's the 10th time you've played him now. Marat said it's turning into the classic rivalry between you two. How do you assess his form compared to when you played him before?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, today he surprised me physically. He was really, really good physically in the court. Doing a lot of rallies with me, you know. He didn't look so tired.

So, you know, he fighted until the end, as me. And, you know, he did better than me at the tiebreak. So I think was one of the chances.

Q. You were champion, a year later you weren't fit enough to properly defend your title. You're clearly on your way back now. How far away from your peak do you think you still are?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I don't know. Is difficult to say, you know. Every year is different, is very difficult to compare.

But today I was not 100% in my tennis. I fight until the end, and I played really good points. But I think I didn't play my best tennis.

But anyway, physically, I was feeling so good in the court. I was running so well, so fast. So, you know, the tennis will come along in the next weeks. I expect to get a good result in the next weeks.

Q. Do you think, therefore, following my colleague's question, that you are near to the form when you were champion?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Again, it's really difficult to compare. It's really difficult, you know. That time I won every matches in three sets, less two.

So, you know, that time I played seeded in third round, but less dangerous than Safin. You know, here, in third round against Safin, you know, you have to be 100% to win.

So it's really different years to compare. It's not easy.

Q. If you remember, Marat wasn't very happy in Hamburg a few weeks ago.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Uh?hmm.

Q. Have you spoken to each other much since then?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Not too much. Not too much.

Q. How do you see the rest of the tournament in the men's draw? Do you have a favorite, do you think, for the tournament? If so, who is it?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, you know, Nadal is favorite, of course. You know, he is playing so good. Physically, so strong.

Coria is playing so well as well.

Federer and Moya, we'll see, because, you know, it's very tough match to say.

And, you know, Gaudio.

It's very open this year. It's very difficult to say.

THE MODERATOR: Spanish questions, please.

Q. You talked about missed opportunities. Do you think this was because you didn't play them well enough or because Marat was playing too well?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't think I made that many mistakes. I think we made about the same number. But Marat puts a lot of pressure. And when he's taking the initiative, it's very difficult to pass him.

Every time I had an opportunity, 5-4, 4-1, he really resisted from a psychological point of view. Maybe I could have insisted a little bit more, and insisted on my forehand, but he was bringing in some backhands crosscourt and I couldn't take the initiative. I really had to wait for an opportunity, wait for an opening, and try to attack as soon as I could.

In any case, I think that he played very well in the critical moments.

Q. You played a wonderful match, but you just didn't win it.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yes, I played well. But I think my tennis wasn't 100%. It was a good match, with very good shots on both sides. And I'm not, of course, entirely satisfied because physically speaking, I felt 100% fit. I think that I could have perhaps gone further in this tournament.

During the first two sets I had a lot of opportunities to win those two sets. And then I would have had a good opportunity to win the match if I had won those two sets.

Q. What were the differences between this match and the match in Hamburg?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, Hamburg, I think the difference was that the balls are very heavy and he was trying to strike too hard and he made too many unforced errors.

Today he had more patience and he had very good moments. I think it was quite different from that point of view.

Q. Juan Carlos, this match after what you lived throughout the last year, has it given you more confidence? Do you think that you're back at the top?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I think I didn't need this match to know that I was back in good shape. I've had good victories. I think I have demonstrated that I'm back at the top.

Q. What do you think were the most difficult points, the point where really the match was decided?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: It's very difficult to give a few points. Maybe I should have attacked more on the forehand. But in any case, that was a bit risky, and I would have taken the risk of making unforced errors.

But I did have difficulties. We had a side wind, and I think it was difficult for both of us.

Q. He seems to have improved his concentration from a psychological point of view.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think that when he is playing a difficult match, he can concentrate really well. He was very concentrated today and very calm on the difficult moments, such as the third set where he was feeling a bit tired all of a sudden.

I think that we both made an effort. I was trying to play my best tennis, but it doesn't always work out that way.

Q. Over the next few days, do you think you can focus more on the fact that you're back in good shape, or that you missed an opportunity going forward in this tournament?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, obviously, in a tournament like this it's always nice to go far. But when you're facing Safin third round, you can lose. It's complicated.

I've played well, and I lost. But normally, this doesn't happen to me when I'm playing well. But then it's Safin, and we know that when he's playing well, he has fabulous shots.

Q. Could you tell us a little bit more about Nadal? You said in English that he was your favorite. Do you think that overall the situation is one that he can go through, or that he is going to be affected by the pressure?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think he has a lot of experience. He played the final in the Davis Cup. I don't think the pressure is any different from a Grand Slam tournament. The difference is that on one hand you play two matches, and on the other hand you play seven.

But if things go his way, obviously, he's a favorite. If he continues to win matches in three sets ? because, obviously, five sets, it's always a bit more difficult, you can always have a problem ? but I can see that he's very fit and he's playing very well.

Q. What are you going to do next? Are you going to play a tournament before Wimbledon?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. I have to think about it. I might play some, yes.

ARTICLE Safin triumphs in epic revenge battle with Ferrero

PARIS (AFP) - Childhood friends Marat Safin and Juan Carlos Ferrero buried their recent feud to serve up an enthralling French Open third round clash which the Russian clinched with a 7-6 (7/5), 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7/2) triumph over the Spaniard.

Australian Open champion Safin's reward is a fourth round match-up against another Spaniard, 15th-seeded Tommy Robredo.

The third round win was also sweet revenge for third-seeded Safin.

He had been beaten in the semi-finals here in 2002 by Ferrero and had also lost both his matches this year against the 2003 French Open champion at Monte Carlo and at Hamburg where the two were involved in an ugly slanging match over a disputed line call.

But all that was forgotten as the former world number ones battled out a memorable tussle on a packed Philippe Chatrier centre court.

"It's the kind of match which you want to watch on the video back home," said Safin.

"I was a little bit tense at the start of the third set and lost concentration. Then, in the fourth, I was lucky I broke back straightaway and then held my serve."

In a marathon first set, Ferrero broke first to lead 2-1 before his fellow 25-year-old hit back in the 10th game to level at 5-5.

A Safin double fault gave the Spaniard a 3-2 edge in the tie-break but back came the Russian setting up set point by valiantly chasing down a Ferrero drop shot.

He then took the opener after 73 minutes on a Ferrero mis-hit.

The Spaniard nipped ahead to lead 2-0 in the second set before Safin again charged back in the seventh.

But a mixture of superb defence and counter-attack helped Safin to break again to lead 5-4 and secured the set with an ace after 2hr and 10min on court.

For the third successive set, Ferrero got an early break to lead 2-0 and then hammered home his advantage to go 4-0 as Safin suffered his now traditional lapse to allow the Spaniard back into the tie after a futher 30 minutes.

The Spaniard needed treatment to his left foot in the changeover but it didn't affect his movement as he broke a laboured Safin service game to lead 3-2 in the fourth set before the Russian came straight back to 3-3.

Safin served a love-game to lead 5-4 courtesy of one sublime drop-shot and a confident pick-up off his toes.

Ferrero twice had to serve to stay in the match showing icy cool as the fourth set went into a tiebreak.

Safin took control with two deep and wide forehands which left Ferrero struggling.

A pinpoint backhand gave him four match points and he wrapped up the tie with a smash after a 3hr 45min duel.

RESULTS JC lost to Marat 6-7 (5), 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (2) in the third round.

ARITCLE ROLAND GARROS - Ferrero to face Safin at third round after easy win against Jan Hernych

Juan Carlos Ferrero Ferrero faces in next round the Australian Open champion Marat Safin after the Russian beat Czech Lukas Dlouhy 6-7 6-3 7-5 6-1.

Former champion Juan Carlos Ferrero reached the third round of the French Open on Thursday after beating Jan Hernych 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Ferrero, who won at Roland Garros in 2003, is seeded 32nd after his ranking plummeted largely because of chickenpox and a rib injury last year. The former top-ranked player has not won a title this year, but he has started to rediscover his form. He reached the semifinals at the Monte Carlo Masters and the final at Barcelona.

"I'm pretty happy, I'm playing good tennis right now," Ferrero said. "But it's hard to compare with two years ago. Step by step, I'm getting better."

Ferrero said the bandage on his left thigh was there only a preventative measure. "I've been wearing it since Saturday, but I felt no pain out there," Ferrero said.

In 2003, Ferrero also won titles at Monte Carlo, Madrid and Valencia and made it to the U.S. Open final.

SAFIN INTERVIEW Here are some excerpts from Marat's interview today where he talks about his knee injury and playing JC in the 3rd round.

Q. What does it mean for the continuation of the tournament and then Wimbledon?

MARAT SAFIN: No, still I have one day off. Try to take care of it. Try to make some ?? I don't know, try to speak to the doctors. And we'll see. I'll get a treatment tomorrow morning, afternoon, take some pills, some painkillers, and try to go out and play against Ferrero. I will see.

[...]

Q. Playing Ferrero when your knee doesn't feel so good doesn't sound like a very good situation.

MARAT SAFIN: I know that. I know that. We'll see.

I mean, one day I can take some things that will relieve the pain and I can continue and can try and finish my tournament here, and then I can stop for a couple of weeks and try to recover. Why not?

But I definitely will come out on the court and play against him. Then just if I need two weeks off, I will take two weeks off. If I need more, I will take more.

But I definitely want to finish the tournament and I want to finish it good.

Q. What makes a difference when you play against Juan Carlos?

MARAT SAFIN: What makes a difference, it's very important, the conditions of the court. Because his game is a little bit ?? he can play ?? he can take one meter, couple of meters back from the baseline, he can play from there. Me, on the other hand, I cannot do that. I need to be really in good shape physically. And of course the courts, they have to be good, so I can step in. So I can play fast. Because otherwise, if I start to make rallies with him, he is better than me.

So the courts here are pretty good. Need to be focused. Try to be consistent on my serve and try to risk a little bit on his. Then with a little bit of luck, I think I can break him.

ARTICLE Ferrero smiles again in Paris

PARIS (Reuters) - When Juan Carlos Ferrero obliterated Martin Verkerk to win his first French Open crown in 2003, the Spaniard's grip on the claycourt season was iron.

Lightning quick around the court with a punchy forehand and the ability to run all day, the lightweight baseliner with the heavyweight game had a bright future ahead of him.

Later that year he reached the final of the U.S. Open and became the first player since Ivan Lendl in 1980 to win at least 30 matches on both clay and hard courts in a season.

Things can change quickly in tennis, however, and in 2004 the softly-spoken Spaniard suffered a miserable period.

He missed the month of March with chicken pox. After a tentative and abortive comeback in April he needed another month to recuperate and gain strength.

In May he injured his wrist and ribs in a fall while practising and as defending champion lost in the second round in Paris.

After Wimbledon in June he failed to win back-to-back matches for the rest of the year and finished outside the top 30 for the first time in five years.

DANGEROUS PLAYER

Still feeling his way back, Ferrero survived a tricky Roland Garros first-round match Tuesday and his quiet confidence was at once topped up.

"I just keep playing my game," he smiled after beating Karol Beck 6-4 6-3 6-3. "I think I'm playing well.

"I've been playing well this season. If I'm not considered a favorite, well, that's all right. I think if I keep playing well, I might become a favorite."

Ferrero has been overshadowed by his compatriot Rafael Nadal whose fantastic form heading into the Open installed him as pre-tournament favorite to win it on his debut.

Ferrero reached the semi-finals on his debut in 2000 and knows the pressure expectation can bring. He also feels Nadal deserves the accolades after winning in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome.

"Well, it's normal that he's a great favorite -- he's won a lot of tournaments on clay. There's a lot of respect for him on this type of court," said Ferrero who lost to Nadal in Valencia and Barcelona.

"He is a very dangerous player. He has a lot of strength. He's very fit. I think he's playing excellent tennis. He has great opportunities here in the French Open. He's through to the second round and we have to see what happens."

Ferrero could almost have been talking about himself.

ARTICLE Safin accuses Ferrero of child's play

HAMBURG, Germany, May 11 (Reuters) - A furious Marat Safin accused Juan Carlos Ferrero of acting like a 14-year-old after losing 4-6 6-4 6-2 to the Spaniard in the second round of the Hamburg Masters on Wednesday.

The Russian third seed had a long argument with the chair umpire at 2-0 down in the second set after an overrule and was infuriated when an impatient Ferrero asked the official to order Safin to resume playing.

"I don't understand what Ferrero was complaining about," said Safin, whose rivalry with the Spaniard dates back to their time as juniors. "I grew up with the guy basically, we've known each other for 11 years and the guy is doing this to me.

"I don't think it was really polite from his part. You have to act like a gentleman. I'm not trying to cheat anybody, I'm just asking (about the call), I'm just trying to prove my point.

"But don't give me this attitude, like a kid who is 14 years old."

The Australian Open champion, who also lost to Ferrero at the Monte Carlo Masters last month, added: "He should realise himself, he's 25 years old, a little bit grown up, he's played a lot of tournaments and we've known each other 11 years.

"I don't need to cheat anybody. I'm trying to win the match. It really pissed me off."

CALM FERRERO

Ferrero, who is beginning to rediscover the form that brought him the French Open title in 2003, said he hoped their friendship would not be damaged by the incident.

"Sometimes Marat gets a little bit nervous and then he does something like this," he said. "I tried to stay calm and focus on the next point.

"The umpire can't spend three minutes talking with a player, he had to stop it. Three minutes is too much.

"But Marat is like this sometimes. I know him and am very friendly with him. I hope this doesn't mean too much in the relationship."

He also rejected Safin's claim that he had been talking to his coach constantly during the match.

"My coach talked to me one or two times in the whole match, exactly the same as his coach," said Ferrero, whose win set up a last 16 clash with another Russian, Nikolay Davydenko.

"I'm feeling really good physically. I feel I can beat anybody," said the Spaniard, who has slipped to number 39 in the rankings after a succession of fitness problems.
