ARTICLE Nieminen, Massu, Davydenko, Ferrero reach quarterfinals at Swedish Open

BASTAD, Sweden -- Jarkko Nieminen rallied to beat Lukas Dlouhy 6-7 (2), 6-0, 6-3 Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals at the Swedish Open.

The fourth-seeded Finn took control after losing the opening set. He won the second set in 20 minutes, breaking the Czech's serve three times.

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko also needed three sets to advance to the quarterfinals, defeating fellow Russian Yuri Schukin 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.

Others reaching the last eight were Chile's Nicolas Massu, who beat Jose Acasuso of Argentina 6-4, 6-2, and No. 8 seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Oliver Marach of Austria.

Nieminen will play Ferrero on Friday. Davydenko will face Massu.

"My confidence is good because I have played better this year," said Nieminen, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals last week, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. "I've been steady on all surfaces, and adjusting from grass to clay was easier than I thought it would be."

Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, who lost to eventual champion Roger Federer in the Wimbledon semifinals, lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to Germany's Alexander Waske in a first-round match.

ARTICLE Robredo, Ferrero extended to three sets in Sweden

BASTAD, Sweden -- Seeded Spaniards Tommy Robredo and Juan Carlos Ferrero were extended to three sets in their opening-round matches at the Swedish Open on Monday.

Second-seeded Robredo rallied to beat Gilles Simon of France 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and eighth-seeded Ferrero defeated Swedish wild card Ervin Eleskovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Robredo has reached the semifinals at the clay-court Swedish Open three times. In May, he won the title at the Hamburg Masters.

Ferrero, a former No. 1, was up a set and led 2-0 in the second. But the 579th-ranked, 19-year-old Eleskovic won six games to one to force a third set. Eleskovic doubled-faulted three times when trailing 3-4 in the third set for Ferrero's break.

ARTICLE

Radek Stepanek overcame Juan Carlos Ferrero in a four-hour, five-set thriller to progress to his first Grand Slam singles fourth round.

The Czech No.14 seed defeated the Spaniard 5-7, 6-7, (4-7), 6-4, 6-2, 11-9 in a match that could have gone either way. For Juan Carlos Ferrero, Wimbledon has always proved a tricky affair. Of the four Grand Slam events, it has been his least happy hunting ground – he has only reached the last 16 twice, in 2003 and last year. However, at the start of the match the agile Spaniard proved to be the more adventurous player, charging the net one minute and dancing along the baseline the next to hit spectacular returns.

Very soon he was two sets up. But Stepanek retaliated in the third and fourth sets by firing down aces and lifting his overall game to push the duel to five sets. Luck appeared to be against the Spaniard in the final set when several net-cords fell in Stepanek’s favour. One of them came when Ferrero was serving at 10-9 down, and equalled the game to 30-30. To Ferrero’s dismay Stepanek then produced a breathtaking winner – one of 92 he hit during the match – to earn match point.

It is a considerable achievement for a 27-year-old who has failed to pass the third round in 16 previous Grand Slam appearances. The Czech now faces Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round, after the Spaniard defeated former Wimbledon runner up and No.4 seed David Nalbandian.

Ah, bad luck.. He could've won this match.. Better luck next time
