ARTICLE Coria, Ferrero advance in Argentina
Guillermo Coria and Juan Carlos Ferrero have both survived scares in the opening round of the Copa Telmex tournament in Buenos Aires.
Second seed Coria, who won this event two years ago, was pushed all the way by Czech Jiri Vanek before eventually sealing the match in a deciding-set tiebreak, 6-1 2-6 7-6 (7-2).
Ferrero was also pushed to three sets by wildcard Juan Martin Del Potro, before winning 6-2 4-6 6-4. He will face either Gustavo Kuerten or Flavio Saretta next.
Serb Boris Pashanski also won in three sets, beating local wildcard Juan Pablo Brzezicki 6-4 5-7 7-5, while Potito Starace eased past Argentine Juan Monaco 6-3 6-3.
Meanwhile, former world No.1 Gustavo Kuerten has pulled out of the event with an ankle injury.
The 29-year-old had been given a special invitation into the tournament, which he won in 2001.
"I haven't had any luck because before this South American section of the tour," he told AFP.
"I twisted my right ankle, it got worse in Peru, and I then knew it would be difficult for me to play here (Buenos Aires)."
