Ferrero's foe lasts just six minutes
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero had the shortest match of his Grand Slam career Monday when Jan Hajek retired from the Australian Open after just six minutes on court.
The Spaniard rocketed through three games, firing four aces and breaking Hajek's serve before the Czech pulled out with a stomach illness.
Ferrero said he had heard Hajek wasn't feeling well but that he had expected his opponent to push through at least one or two sets.
The 2003 French Open winner and U.S. Open runner-up said it was his quickest Grand Slam match since his U.S. Open debut in 1999 - 28 matches ago.
"Yeah, of course it is," he said. "In one way it is good, you know, you win. But sometimes it is better to play three sets or four to get some rhythm."
Ferrero headed to the practice courts after Monday's match to get some more time on court before the next round.
Another early retirement was Sweden's Joachim Johansson, who lasted just two games and 43 minutes against Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez before pulling out with blistered feet.
