ARTICLE Ferrero and Scud confirm Auckland date
Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero and Mark Philippoussis, the Australian who reached the 1998 U.S. Open and 2003 Wimbledon finals, have confirmed they will play at the Auckland Open starting on 9 January 2006.
Spaniard Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, had an injury- and illness-ravaged 2004 but has spent 2005 rebuilding his career and is currently ranked 19th in the world.
The 25-year-old lost to Czech Republic's Jan Hernych in the first round in Auckland this year.
"It is always a special treat for ... spectators to be able to see a player who has been a world number one," tournament director Graham Pearce said on Wednesday.
"Juan Carlos is a class player getting back to his threatening best."
