Wimbledon champion Federer returns to action on Tuesday evening against Germany's Tomas Behrend.
Ferrero admitted he is struggling and will abandon his favoured clay for the hard courts of North America as he looks for a ranking-point boost.
"I'm not playing my best tennis," said the 24-year-old. "I cannot find my game, I'm sadly lacking confidence.
"I want to work hard for the Masters Series events in Toronto and Cincinnati. After that, my goals are to do well at the Davis Cup and the Athens Olympics."
