ARTICLE FERRERO CHASING DAVIS CUP GLORY

Juan Carlos Ferrero has targeted further Davis Cup glory when Spain take on the United States in Seville at the weekend.

Ferrero is the only member of the Spain team to have won the event before after clinching the crucial rubber four years ago against Australia with a thrilling four-set defeat of Lleyton Hewitt in Barcelona.

And the 24-year-old is determined to end a year ravaged by injury and a loss of form by helping his country defeat the States and return to the winners' podium.

"I have been training for more than two weeks on clay courts and have been working especially hard on building up my resistance so as to last five sets which has included weight sessions in the gym," he said.

"In the last few days I have toned it down a stage so I won't be tired in the games.

"Before I was mentally tired and needed a break, to play more would not make much of a difference in the rankings and it was more important to prepare myself for the Davis Cup.

"I am now feeling a lot better with my new racket and have more confidence."

Ferrero, who this season finished outside the top 30 for the first time in five years, has often reserved his best tennis for the Davis Cup.

And it is a tournament which also provides plenty of happy memories.

He added: "My best moment was without doubt against Hewitt in Barcelona although it did give me a lot of pleasure to beat (Martin) Verkerk in Mallorca in April after having so many injuries.

"Since 2000 I have gained a lot more experience and learned to live with moments of pressure having been world number one and champion at Roland Garros.

"Although I am the only player to survive since the last Davis Cup triumph we have players like Carlos Moya who performed at a really high level in Australia last year."
